RESTORATIVE JUSTICE TEEN COURT

CLERK of COURT/Bailiff DUTIES (combined)

 

Before Court:

1.       Check in with Teen Court Registration Desk to sign in, get your name tag and envelope, which contains a docket and docket schedules, as well as the constructive sanctioning form(s).

2.       Meet with the Judge. Introduce yourself and ask about any instructions for him/her. Make sure you know the Judge’s name so you can announce the presiding Judge when you call the Court to order.

3.       Review the materials in the Clerk/Bailiff envelope. Familiarize yourself with the script and the docket (case #’s, Respondents’ names and offenses). You are responsible for the confidential information within the envelope until the Teen Court session is complete and you return it to the Teen Court box.

4.       When respondent arrives, direct them to their seats in the courtroom. Respondent sits at front table and parents may take the front row. Check with the respondent to see if there are any conflicts with the jury list.

5.       Go to the Jury Room to inform the Jury that the respondents have arrived.

6.       Check to see if everyone (Judge, respondent & parent, panelists & jurors) is ready for trial. When all are ready, walk panelists and jurors to the courtroom and line them up behind you to lead them into the courtroom.

7.       Walk into the courtroom. As you enter, say “All rise. This court in and for the county of Barron is now in session, the Honorable Judge (judge’s last name) presiding.”

 

During Court:

8.       Take your seat next to the Judge. During Court, you may refer to the Judge’s script for the Clerk lines. In the event of a multiple respondent case, follow the judge’s instructions.

9.       When directed by the Judge to escort the Respondents, their parents and exit interviewers assigned to each case to the reception area.

10.   Give the Constructive Sanctions form and the case docket to one of the Panelists. Return to the Clerk of Court Box while deliberations are taking place or join the jury for deliberations, as instructed. When the docket has been initialed by all jurors/panelists, return the docket to your envelope.

11.   The jury will notify you that they have determined constructive sanctions. Obtain the completed constructive sanctions form. Bring the Constructive Sanctions sheet to the Judge for review. When the Judge has approved them, return the Constructive Sanctions Sheet to the Foreperson.

12.   Indicate to the Respondents and parents that the deliberations are completed and lead the respondent(s) back into the courtroom. As you enter, say, “All rise. Court is back in session.”  (In the event that there is more than one respondent, bring each respondent back into the courtroom one by one.)

 

After Court:

1.       Make sure the signatures of the Judge and Jury Foreperson are on the Restorative Teen Court Constructive Sanctioning Form and make sure the Exit Interviewer gets the Constructive Sanctioning Form and all other materials are put back into your envelope and returned to the Teen Court Box. 

 

2.      You may then join the jury for PIZZA in the jury room, following clean-up of the Courtroom.
