In order to maintain the size of the jury, you will be assigned to specific dates for jury duty. Once assigned to a date for jury duty, we count on you to come! Job Requirements and Descriptions

Requirements  for ALL Teen Court Volunteers

·     Must be 12-18 years old, in grades 8-12, and in good standing in your community*.

·     Must be able to commit to the nights you agree to serve. If you have a conflict which interferes with your ability to serve, you must notify Linda with at least one week notice. If you miss 3 sessions, you will be dismissed from Teen Court.

·     Must be able to maintain the Oath of Confidentiality.

·     Must be agree to abide by the Code of Conduct and behave with decorum during Teen Court procedures.

·     Must have received training in restorative sign-posts, code of conduct, and Teen Court procedures and sanctions.

Juror Job Description

Jurors report for duty on their assigned nights to follow the Teen Court procedures and thoughtfully hear the cases on the docket. They will be given the opportunity to ask the respondent questions, as directed by the judge. Following the testimony, jurors and panelists deliberate and determine sanctions for the respondent. A juror will be selected as Foreperson. Jurors will share their opinions and participate in the discussions. When sanctions are delivered, jurors support the decisions made by the group and maintain the Oath of Confidentiality.

Clerk of Court/Bailiff Job Description

The Clerk of Court/Bailiff consults with the Judge prior to the cases on the docket and assists the Judge in conducting the Teen Court procedures. He/She collects attendance during deliberation and transfers the Sanction Sheet to and from the Judge.

Panelists

Panelists must have regularly participated in Teen Court for a minimum of 3 sessions and have demonstrated the ability to follow the Code of Conduct. Panelists will be selected by the Teen Court Coordinator, based on the above criteria and the age of the respondent. The panelists ask the respondent, parents, and/or victims questions which help the jury to understand the nature of the offense, the character of the respondent, and the harm which has been caused by the offense.

Foreperson

The Foreperson is assigned during the jury deliberation. He/She guides the jury through the Constructive Sanctions’ sheet and makes sure that ALL jurors speak. In the courtroom, the Foreperson reads the sanctions, as directed by the Judge.

Team Leader

Team Leader will assist Teen Court Coordinator in contacting jurors for duty and assigning responsibilities. He/She may also help with recruitment and training events and act as a contact person in appropriate schools.

Registration Table Assistant

Assistant would arrive one half hour early to assist Teen Court Coordinator in set-up and registration. During the Court sessions, the Assistant greets all the participants and visitors who arrive for the Teen Court hearing and is responsible for the confidential material and fees collected until clean-up time.

Peer Mentor

A Peer Mentor sits in on the Exit Interview with the respondent & family, answering questions about the Teen Court process.  A Peer Mentor acts a friendly liaison for the Respondent, encouraging and assisting them as they complete the Teen Court program.

CONFIDENTIALITY OATH

 

 

 

            I solemnly swear or affirm that I will not divulge, either by words or signs, any information about actual cases which come to my knowledge in the course of Restorative Teen Court presentation, and that I will keep secret all said proceedings which may be held in my presence.

          Further, I understand that if I break confidentiality by telling anyone the names of Restorative Teen Court respondents or any other specific details of the case which may identify that juvenile, I will no longer be able to participate in Restorative Teen Court.

No food, drink, or gum within the courtroom or jury room. I will dress appropriately. No hats, shorts, sweats, or torn clothing. You will be given a Teen Court Polo Shirt to wear over your shirt.

3.      I agree to use appropriate language.

4.      I agree to respect the premises.

5.      I agree to give respect to all participants in Restorative Teen Court.

6.      I respect all advisors in the Restorative Teen Court Program.

7.      I will not discriminate against anyone on the basis of race, color, creed, age, sex, religion, sexual orientation, disability, status, or nationality.

8.      I will give a genuine interest in all persons served, and dedicate myself to their best interests, and helping them to help themselves.

9.      I will not exploit the trust of Restorative Teen Court participants or the public.

10.  I will accurately represent my education, training, experience, and competencies as they relate to my involvement in Restorative Teen Court.

11.  I will seek assistance for any problems that impair my ability to carry out my duties in the Restorative Teen Court program.

12.  I will act in accordance with the standards of professional integrity in Restorative Teen Court.

BY SIGNATURE BELOW, I AFFIRM, AS DO MY PARENTS/GUARDIANS, THAT I UNDERSTAND AND AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES ASSOCIATED WITH PARTICIPATION IN RESTORATIVE TEEN COURT.

Members of Teen Court agree to abide by the Teen Court Code of Conduct and the Oath of Confidentiality.

 

It is further agreed that the undersigned do hereby compromise and forever release, acquit, discharge, indemnify, and covenant to hold harmless, the Restorative Teen Court staff and volunteers, its’ employees, and officials from any and all actions, claims, liability, demands, damages, costs, loss of service, medical expense, and compensation on account of or in any way growing out of any and all known and unknown personal injuries, property damages, or any other type of damage, which the undersigned by hereinafter have individually and/or as a parent/guardian or custodian of said minor, resulting or growing out of the participation of the youth in the Restorative Justice Teen Court Program of Barron County.
